WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY

The word philosophy is derived from two Greek words ''philo'' meaning love and ''sophia'' meaning wisdom,  Early philosophers like Socrates preferred to call his students ''lovers of wisdom'' or philosophers.Philosophy literally means love of wisdom. This is one of the first considered precise characterization of the subject in academic record.. Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems such as those connected with existence , knowledge , value , reason,mind and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, general systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. Although abstract it emphases the need for practical realization of truth. Philosophy  can be been as the oldest discipline and mother of all sciences . It is at the root of all sciences.It is the search for general understanding of values and reality by chiefly  speculative rather than observational means. Philosophy studies the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence especially when considered as an academic  discipline .
It can also be seen as theory or altitude that acts as guiding principle for behavior,a guide for living. Generally speaking philosophy is a comprehensive system of ideas about human nature and the nature of reality we live in. it is , because the issues it addresses are basic and pervasive, determining the course we take and how we treat other people. Furthermore,is a set of ideals, standards or beliefs used to describe behavior and thought it studies the fundamental nature of existence of man and man’s relationship to existence. In the realm of cognition , the special sciences are the trees but philosophy is the soil which makes the forest possible. Examples of philosophies are  Marxism,Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and African traditional customs and practices.
